What is THC?

The easiest way to understand THC is by understanding the plant differences of the Marijuana plant vs the Hemp plant.  Because of the upbringing and laws in place, the majority of the population see them as the same plant but this is very incorrect.  It's not your fault, we have just been very very misinformed.

Stay with me because this exact example helped me have a gigantic "ah-ha" moment in understanding what THC is and more importantly, which plant it is NOT in.

It's easiest to picture the category of Citrus plants.  For the obvious example; an orange, grapefruit, lemons and so forth are all part of the Citrus family.

So is Hemp the cousin of the Marijuana plant and all part of the Cannabis family.  The biggest difference is one has THC and the other does not.  Isn't it easier to see it separated using this example?

What does THC do?

THC, or tetrahydrocannabinol, is the chemical responsible for most of marijuana's psychological effects. It acts much like the cannabinoid chemicals made naturally by the body, according to the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA).  Cannabinoid chemicals are incredible.  They help truly balance the body's entire systems.

Yet, as we get older, they begin to deteriorate and it is not found in our foods as much as it was even just a few decades ago.

CBD on Pets and Making Sure its Safe For Your Pet

Effects on the mind and body

THC stimulates cells in the brain to release dopamine. This creates the "high" so many people talk about. It also interferes with how information is processed in the hippocampus, which is part of the brain responsible for forming new memories. This solidifies the reason college kids smoked pot and claimed they were studying, would then fail their tests and wonder why.

Concentrations of THC in cannabis

Cannabinoid receptors are concentrated in certain areas of the brain associated with thinking, memory, pleasure, coordination and time perception. Remarkably, THC attaches to these receptors and activates them. According to NIDA, this then affects several different sensors and systems such as a person's memory, pleasure, movements, thinking, concentration, coordination, and sensory and time perception.

THC is one of many compounds found in the resin secreted by glands of the marijuana plant. More of these glands are found around the reproductive organs of the plant than on any other area of the plant. Other compounds unique to marijuana, called cannabinoids, are present in this resin. One cannabinoid, CBD is non psychoactive, according to the National Center for Biotechnology Information, and actually blocks the high associated with THC.
